A leaking pump is causing the city to close Eagle Park Pool in Mountain View for three weeks starting Monday, Aug. 11.

The pool is slated to be closed through Sept. 1, according to the city’s website. Youth and community swim activities will be relocated temporarily to Rengstorff Park Aquatics Center, resulting in schedule changes for all programs, the city said.

The pool’s main pump “is failing and requires immediate maintenance to prevent an unplanned closure,” according to the city.

Early in the summer, the leaking pool pump was identified as an issue and underwent some “in-house” repair work but was never fully fixed, according to Mountain View spokesperson Lenka Wright. The leak was caused by internal corrosion, a common occurrence in older pool equipment, Wright said in an email.

“Given that the pump runs continuously year-round – circulating chemically treated water 24 hours a day – this type of wear is expected over time,” Wright said. “Eventually, all pool pumps require a rebuild, and this one has now reached that point after years of reliable service.”

It is estimated that the full repairs will take two to three weeks, including time for transport, disassembly, internal part replacement, testing and reinstallation, Wright said. The city has scheduled a three-week closure for the pool but will reopen sooner if the work is completed in less time and the pool is deemed safe and fully operational.

The estimated cost to fix the pump is $7,800, Wright said.

Last year, the city allocated $1.8 million for more substantial renovations at Eagle pool that were tentatively scheduled to begin this fall and take four to six months to complete. The improvements have since been delayed as the city is balancing other capital improvement projects at the same time, according to Wright.

“Currently, there is no updated construction schedule,” Wright said. “Key steps like design, permitting, and procurement still need to be completed before a new timeline can be confirmed. Once those are in place, construction will be scheduled to minimize impacts on aquatics programming as much as possible.”

More information about the upcoming schedule changes to Eagle Park Pool and Rengstorff Park Aquatics Center is available on the city website.

  1. How disappointing that this closed the pool when the weather really began to warm.

It is a surprise that temporary pumps are not available for rent while this broken pump needs repair. Other pools do that to avoid closure of the entire facility while a long process runs, such as a rebuild.
