A pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle Saturday afternoon in a Walmart parking lot in Mountain View has died, according to a statement the police department released Thursday.
The pedestrian, Gayle Nakano, an 83-year-old Palo Alto resident, was identified by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s office. The coroner’s office attributed the cause of death to blunt force injuries to the head from a vehicle collision.
Nakano was conscious when officers were dispatched to the Walmart parking lot at 600 Showers Drive around 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 23, according to police. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment but died two days later on Aug. 25, police said.
The driver remained at the parking lot on Saturday and cooperated with officers, police said. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been factors in the collision, according to police.
This is the second time in two years that a pedestrian has been fatally struck by a vehicle in the Walmart parking lot. A Walmart employee ran over a pedestrian when visibility in the parking lot was low during the early morning hours of Dec. 4, 2023.
There have also been at least two other pedestrian fatalities in Mountain View this year. In April, a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle at the intersection of El Camino Real and Escuela Avenue. In January, a pedestrian was killed in a hit and run at the corner of Amphitheatre Parkway and Joaquin Road.

Such a tragedy. I knew the Nakanos through a friend of mine. It’s hard to imagine how such an accident could occur in a crowded parking lot in the middle of the day.
I’m not at all surprised this happened again. The Walmart parking lot is a nightmare for pedestrians and drivers alike. I don’t understand why it hasn’t been redesigned for safety.
I agree! And I think the plans to build a school where Kohl’s was are still moving forward. I really hope the San Antonio Center design is reexamined before lots of juveniles are added to the mix.
That parking lot is a wild west of chaos. So sad to see that it cost a life
