Many high school basketball games scheduled for Tuesday were canceled or postponed due to the surging omicron variant of the coronavirus. Gunn’s SCVAL El Camino Division opener went on as scheduled at Lynbrook, but the way it turned out the Titans would just as soon have wished it never took place.
Lynbrook shot well from beginning to end and Gunn was never able to recover from an icy start in what ended up as a 63-41 Lynbrook victory.
Gunn (9-3, 0-1) trailed 15-4 after a first quarter in which it shot 1 of 11. Lynbrook (11-3, 2-0) extended its lead to 34-16 at halftime and 53-28 after three quarters.
“Give credit to Lynbrook,” Gunn coach Brandynn Williams said. “They played great defense and hit their shots. We didn’t hit our shots. Hopefully we can bounce back.”
Colin Lee led Gunn with 10 points. He knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers late in the third quarter. But by then it was too late to mount a comeback. Rogan Gibbons scored 7 and sophomore James Ford scored 6 on a pair of second-half 3-pointers.
Lynbrook made only one 3, but shot close to 50% throughout the game by taking the ball to the hoop for high-percentage shots. Nikhil Narasimhan, a 6-4 senior, led all scorers with 19 points.
“Offensively you might not have it some days, but you can always lock in on defense,” Williams said. “We scored 41 points and we’ve won games scoring 41 points. Defensively we need to do some fundamental things better.”
Gunn hadn’t played for a week since winning the Steve Cain Classic at Milpitas the previous Tuesday.
“It seems like when we have a break our rhythm is off,” Williams said. “I still have confidence in our guys. We’ll make some adjustments. We have Los Gatos Friday and Fremont Saturday. It’s going to be exciting.”
