Mountain View City Council set to swear in new members, pick mayor

As January gets underway, Mountain View will soon have a new set of leaders.

At a Tuesday, Jan. 14, meeting, the Mountain View City Council is set to swear in four council members and elect a mayor and vice mayor.

Incumbents Pat Showalter and Emily Ann Ramos, as well as former council members Chris Clark and John McAlister, were elected in November. On Tuesday, they will formally take the oath of office and join Alison Hicks, Lucas Ramirez and Ellen Kamei on the dais.

The seven council members will then select a mayor and vice major from amongst themselves. The city council generally rotates who serves in the two leadership positions. Because Vice Mayor Lisa Matichak is terming out, there isn’t someone immediately in line to take the top position.

The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. and take place in the council chambers at City Hall, 500 Castro St. To view the agenda and find information on how to watch online, visit mountainview.legistar.com. The Voice will also cover the results of the meeting next week.

New nonprofit works to recycle for 3D printing waste

Mountain View residents looking to recycle 3D printing waste have a new option with PrintCycle. The recently launched nonprofit has partnered with Peninsula Precious Plastics to collect, shred and repurpose 3D printing byproducts into reusable items.

“PrintCycle is about more than just recycling,” said Jason Reynolds, PrintCycle co-founder and business owner of Jinxbot, a 3D print shop in Mountain View. “It’s about closing the loop on 3D printing materials, and making an already efficient means of production that much more sustainable,” he said in a press release.

PrintCycle offers a “donate what you can” subscription model to keep the service affordable while covering the cost of transportation and processing. Businesses, schools and individuals can sign up for a collection bin or can drop off materials directly at 693 Calderon Ave. in Mountain View.

“We want to give Mountain View residents and businesses an easy, responsible way to dispose of 3D printing scrap while contributing to the city’s sustainability goals,” Reynolds said.
