A man was killed in downtown Palo Alto on Saturday night when the truck he was driving crashed into an elevated median, police said in a news release.
The collision occurred on Alma Street, near the University Avenue overcrossing, according to a news release from the Palo Alto Police Department. Police and paramedics learned about the collision at about 11:57 p.m. and arrived to see the victim, a man in his 40s, unconscious in a pickup truck.
The man was identified by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner’s Office as Daniel Meda, Jr., a 40-year-old resident of Valley Springs.
The man was extricated from the truck by emergency responders from the Fire Department and taken to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased, police said. The road was closed for about three hours as the Specialized Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team investigated at the scene.
The man was reportedly driving the truck northbound on Alma when the vehicle went off the road and hit the elevated median, according to the police. It’s not clear whether drugs or alcohol were a factor or what caused the accident, police said.
Police said they do not believe any other vehicles were involved.
