The nomination period for the Nov. 3 general election opens Monday, July 13, marking the official start of the local election season.

Candidates will have until Aug. 7 to file nomination documents with the appropriate election officials. If an eligible incumbent does not file for reelection, the deadline will be extended to Aug. 12.

The Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters oversees filings for school boards and many special district races, while the Mountain View City Clerk’s Office handles candidate filings for City Council. The registrar recommends candidates file early to allow time to resolve any issues.

“Our office is proud to offer inclusive and accessible candidate services for all candidates, both at the state and the local levels,” Registrar of Voters Matt Moreles said in a news release. “We encourage candidates to file as early as possible to ensure all paperwork is complete and error-free.”
