Visit an art festival nestled in the redwoods at the 60th anniversary Kings Mountain Art Fair, learn about Haiti’s fight for democracy at Justice Vanguard’s movie night and catch some tunes by the bay when Pride and Joy SF plays Rock the Dock.
Kings Mountain Art Fair
The redwood forest where the Kings Mountain Art Fair takes place each year is a setting as picture-perfect as the art on display, and this year marks the 60th anniversary of this most scenic art festival. Guests can peruse the works of over 120 juried artists, as well as about 20 local artists. The festival showcases work in a variety of media, including jewelry, paintings, sculpture, textiles, decorative and functional ceramics, furniture and woodworking, wearable art and photography.
The fair also offers an online gallery and virtual fair walk for early shopping, or for those who can’t make it in person this year. A variety of breakfast and lunch offerings — including the “world’s largest cookies” — are available for hungry shoppers, and the youngest visitors can enjoy crafts and games at Kiddie Hollow. The fair is 100% volunteer-run, with all proceeds benefitting the all-volunteer Kings Mountain Fire Department and the Kings Mountain Elementary School.

Haiti: Harvest of Hope
Justice Vanguard presents a movie night that also includes an art show, dinner and a panel discussion. The social justice organization hosts movie nights highlighting important global and political topics. The group’s Sept. 2 movie night, presented jointly with activist group Haiti Action, features a screening of “Haiti: Harvest of Hope,” a 1994 documentary that had aimed to tell the story of the election of Jean-Bertrand Aristide as president of Haiti but instead became a chronicle of a military coup in the nation and later of Aristide’s return. Guests can also take in works by Black Panther party artist and graphic designer Emory Douglas. The movie night includes a panel discussion with members of Haiti Action, whose longtime focus has been on bringing a democratic government to Haiti. The evening also features dinner from Tal Palo, a Los Altos cafe and store celebrating Mexican culture.

Pride and Joy at Rock the Dock
Catch some tunes by the bay Sept. 2 as dance band Pride and Joy SF plays the Rock the Dock concert series. The Port of Redwood City hosts the weekly concerts, which showcase a variety of Bay Area bands, including this longtime favorite. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and refreshments to enjoy the outdoor concert experience. They can also grab a bite at on-site food vendors.
