Brass Over Bridges
Brass Over Bridges is a San Francisco-based brass quintet with a mission to engage audiences of all backgrounds – and especially inspire young musicians – by “bridging barriers of style and artistic discipline” and offering outreach performances, according to the group’s website. The quintet (trumpet players Ari Micich and Joseph Brown, French horn player Erika Miras, trombonist Esther Armendariz and bass trombonist Will Baker) will perform a free family concert at the Palo Alto Art Center March 30, in partnership with the Music at Kohl Mansion program.

Through the Composer’s Lens
Whether it’s a drama, rom-com or horror, a key player in just about any film is one you don’t actually see on the screen: the musical score. Music@Menlo delves into what makes film music great and how the silver screen has shaped the work of some composers with a two-day residency curated by cellist Dmitri Atapine. On March 28, Music@Menlo artists present an interactive discussion with musical demonstrations. Then, on March 30, they will perform a concert program that highlights music’s impact on movies, and vice versa, by exploring composer Dmitry Shostakovich and Soviet cinema, the music of Italian composer Nino Rota and Hollywood composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold. The program also features brand-new, film noir-inspired music from Libby Larsen and Patrick Castillo. An ensemble of Music@Menlo musicians performs selections by these composers. Come to one or both of these events to discover more about music and the movies.
Both events take place at venues on the Menlo School campus, 50 Valparaiso Ave., Atherton. Discussion March 28, 7 p.m., $25; Concert March 30, 4 p.m., $30 for audience members under 30/$65 for 30 and over, musicatmenlo.org.

‘Changing the Narrative’ artist talk
As of last fall, the Pacific Art League (PAL) became a hot spot for a medium that’s maybe not seen as often as other types of visual art: encaustic works. Through a grant from the International Encaustic Artists organization, PAL began offering classes in encaustic work. Learn more about this unique medium, which involves painting or printing with pigmented wax, at a free online talk hosted by PAL. The talk highlights the Palo Alto art institution’s current exhibition, “Changing the Narrative,” presented in collaboration with the International Encaustic Artists. Get to know the artists featured in the show as they share their creative processes and inspirations in this talk hosted by artist Lonnie Zarem, who specializes in encaustic work, and PAL Executive Director Aly Gould.
March 30, 10 a.m. online, free. pacificartleague.org.
