‘Building El Sueño‘ exhibit
This exhibit at the Los Altos History Museum profiles Isabel Merriman, the lesser known sister of Sarah Winchester (who built the San Jose mansion now known as the Winchester Mystery House). According to the exhibit description, Merriman was “an energetic whirlwind of a woman,” who lived on a farmhouse called “El Sueño,” meaning “The Dream.” An activist for animal and children’s rights, she was a key figure in the rural community that became the town of Los Altos. The exhibit features historical photographs, her letters, Victorian clothing and architectural elements resembling those at “El Sueño.” The museum also hosts some related events, including a July 16 talk about Merriman and Winchester with historian Mary Jo Ignoffo and author Robin Chapman and “Isabel’s Scavenger Hunt,” a family-friendly event in the museum’s garden on Aug 9.
Thursdays through Sundays, noon to 4 p.m., through Nov. 30 at the Los Altos History Museum, 51 S. San Antonio Road, Los Altos; free admission; losaltoshistory.org.
‘California in Brushstrokes’
Artist Abby Zhang’s impressionistic oil paintings of California’s natural beauty – “California in Brushstrokes” – will be on view at Gallery 9 in Los Altos this month, with an opening reception July 12, 1:30-5 p.m. Her work combines vivid colors with expressionistic brushwork and reflects her deep respect for nature and the San Francisco Bay Area’s diverse landscapes, painted en plein air. “Abby’s approach focuses on capturing fleeting impressions — a gust of wind in tall grass, coastal fog drifting over the beach, or the quiet stillness of marshlands at dusk,” according to an Instagram post from Gallery 9.
Through July 27, Tuesday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday noon-5 p.m., Gallery 9, 143 Main St., Los Altos; free; gallery9losaltos.com.
