We like a good celebration at The Food Party! These next couple weeks feature our annual Holiday Guide to What’s Happening, shiny lights and fa-la-la around town. Food Partying! in your own hood supports local business, and keeps money in our community. Be a tourist in your own town and enjoy local treasures and new offerings this festive season.

Meyhouse

Enter this Turkish-style eatery and be greeted by well….fish!

Fresh fish waiting to be used in some most amazing dishes like a Charcoal Grilled Whole Fish of the Day and 3-week-salt-cured Lakerda, a delicate, simple yet exotic sushi-like dish. Honestly, I’m no raw-ish fish fan, but the application was masterful.

Lakerda ($25) – a house specialty

You’re also greeted with delicious home baked bread and their magic Meyhouse spread of lemon, scallion and spices. Do not pass this combination up – keto be damned.

For drinks it was a fun combination of refreshing but not forced specialty cocktails.

Being plant-forward Food Partiers, it’s a treat to find restaurants offering more vegetables in creative preparations. Meyhouse features a nice selection, and for dinner we ordered all meza’s or a sampling of their small plates. For protein, add in Hummus with Brown Butter and Pinenut ($19), or Karidesli Enginar ($20), artichoke bottoms braised in olive oil. (Ask for vegan made with a double portion of fava bean spread).

If you are a solo eater, the bar is a great place to perch; lots of light, lots of room and out of the way so you can make yourself at home with a real Turkish tea ($3) and classic dessert.

Besides good food, Meyhouse has a number of live music/ jazz and comedy shows coming up. Check the holiday event schedule here.

Eos & Nyx

Another Mediterranean -themed restaurant just arrived in the heart of downtown San Jose. Chef Nicko Moulinos leads Eos and Nyx’ ‘s open kitchen, filling the two-story, tree-filled space with smells and tastes of coastal Greece and nearby regions.

Guests enjoy surprises woven into the dining experience, including amuse-bouche and take home sweets presented later in the meal.

An open almond wood-fired grill lend a signature smokey touch to dishes like the dry aged, “jorge” ribeye, pork and lamb chops and others.

Plant-forward eaters may just order la-carte, with many vegetable options to choose from, or please consider the umami-filled rigatoni with champignon, sweet pepper and manouri cheese. Delicious!

The plant-powered among us are very grateful for this new and ever-growing appreciation of vegetables on menus, and Eos and Nyx does not disappoint. However, and as always, we encourage some type of vegetarian protein to accompany selections. Protein needs aside, our favorite dish on the menu was Everything Carrots ($17). Yum! A gorgeous, crispy, tasty mélange of carrots, three ways with fennel, truffle and hazelnut.

Sit at the bar and enjoy with a happy hour specialty drink, or maybe you prefer dessert? Try the deconstructed Lemon Pie ($13). With a tap it cracks open into a luxurious surprise of blueberry, almond, tarragon and creamy.

Meyhouse is open Christmas Eve and has a big New Years Eve party planned.

Eos and Nyx is closed Thanksgiving and Christmas.
