An annual tradition, the reclassification ceremony honors students who have passed the tests necessary to exit the district’s English learner program.

The district held the celebration at Crittenden Middle School. In addition to students and their families, Superintendent Ayindé Rudolph, four school board members and various school staff and administrators were in attendance.

“It is an incredible accomplishment to be able to speak more than one language, and we celebrate the hard work and determination of our students, families, and staff,” district spokesperson Shelly Hausman said in an email.

In total, the school district has over 1,100 students who are considered English learners, which is about 25% of the district’s population, Hausman said.

Mountain View reschedules citywide garage sale for September

Mountain View’s citywide garage sale is slated to be held Sept. 14-15, a change from the normal springtime schedule.

The annual tradition typically occurs the first weekend in May, but city officials decided to reschedule it this year because rainy weather impacted turnout and sales at last year’s event.

Each year, homes throughout the city concurrently hold garage sales, and the city creates a map and address list of the participating homes.

After this year’s event, the city plans to conduct a survey to determine participants’ preference between spring and fall for the sale.

  1. The reclassification ceremony was The Best part of being a Trustee on this Board of Education.

Over the course of the last decade – MVWSD has gradually improved its process so more students can ‘move into the mainstream’. IMO a large part of this came from Board direction – it did not make any sense to have English Learners, who were doing ‘only average’ on their state testing to be held out of the regular instructional English learning pathways.

The administration and staff studied the issue – came up with a policy revision (to suggest) and the Board voted to changed the policy of exactly how to set-the-bar on reclassification.

The Board sets the Public Policy, the administration – well, administers that policy. All done publicly over many months and many Board public meetings.
