Mountain View woman celebrates 105th birthday
Elzene Yancey, one of Mountain View’s oldest living residents, celebrated turning 105 years old earlier this week among family and friends. The birthday celebration took place at the Los Altos United Methodist Church on Sunday, Jan. 19, followed by a cake reception at Yancey’s home in the Waverly Park neighborhood.
Born on Jan. 16, 1920, Yancey grew up on a Missouri farm with no electricity or running water. She attended college and earned a teaching degree before working in an airplane factory during WWII. Shortly after the war ended, Yancey married and had two sons. In 1963, her family moved to Mountain View, and Yancey has been living in the same home ever since then.
The birthday festivities drew about 40 neighbors to Yancey’s front yard, many of whom shared stories about Yancey and growing up in the neighborhood.
“Elzene is now striding into her 106th year and doing well,” her oldest son said.
