Local young people will be able to pick up free lunches at Rengstorff Park this summer, thanks to a partnership between the Mountain View Whisman School District and Santa Clara County.

The school district will be serving free meals to anyone under 18 years of age from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekdays from June 9 through July 31. Meals won’t be served on June 19 and July 4, in recognition of the Juneteenth and Fourth of July holidays.

Mountain View Whisman spokesperson Shelly Hausman said that the district is anticipating that the free lunch program will be popular this summer due to the impact rising living costs have had on the prevalence of families experiencing food insecurity.

“Many students rely on school meals as a primary source of nutrition,” Hausman said. “This long-standing program in MVWSD is an important service to our community that helps our children have consistent access to nutritious food and eases the financial burden on families who may already be stretched.”

No ID is required to pick up food and no questions will be asked, according to the school district.

Santa Clara County provides a portion of the funding for the program, Hausman said.

Rengstorff Park is located at 201 S. Rengstorff Ave. in Mountain View. For more information, visit the school district’s website.
