Caltrans adds bike lane separators on El Camino
Vertical posts have begun to be installed along the El Camino Real in Mountain View, separating the newly installed bike lanes from vehicle traffic.
The California Department of Transportation is in the midst of a long-awaited project to add bike lanes along El Camino Real throughout Mountain View, Los Altos and Palo Alto.
In recent weeks, work crews have begun to install the flexible lane separators, starting on the northbound side where the lanes begin near the Sunnyvale border. The installation is not yet complete.
Caltrans is using a product from Qwick Kurb that has vertical flex posts attached to a raised curb. The separators are being installed along much of the route, with the exception of “conflict points.” These are locations like intersections and driveways where cars need to cross paths with bikers.

Taste of Mountain View is coming up
The Taste of Mountain View is returning to Castro Street on Wednesday, June 11, an annual event that showcases a wide selection of food and drink offerings from downtown Mountain View.
“Taste of Mountain View is not only a lovely social event for families and friends, it’s also a night of discovery,” said Peter Katz, CEO and president of the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce. “I love hearing locals say ‘I’ve never been in here before, and now I’ll be back!’” Katz said in a press release.
This year, people can sample tasty bites, fine wines and craft beers from 18 different participating restaurants and businesses on Castro Street.
Tickets are about $75 for a food and drink combo and about $40 for a food-only option. The event typically sells out early and advance purchase tickets are recommended, according to the press release.
Hosted by the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce and The Downtown Business Association, the event will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, with the check in process occurring at Civic Center Plaza at 500 Castro St. in Mountain View.

The bike lane seperators are a step in the right direction, but I dont think theyre enough to protect cyclists on El Camino Real
The vertical separators for the bike lanes on El Camino are great! Hopefully that will discourage people from parking in the bike lanes. Cars that are parked in the bike lane force bike riders to pull out into car travel lanes to get around.
