Senior center hosts Chanukah celebration

The Mountain View Senior Center is slated to host a Chanukah celebration from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17.

The Chabad Jewish Center of Mountain View will lead attendees in a celebration of the Festival of Lights. There will be a menorah lighting demonstration, dreidel spinning, classic Chanukah songs, treats and refreshments, and holiday crafts, according to the senior center’s website.

The event is free and open to those 55 and older. It will be held in the senior center’s arts and crafts room, 266 Escuela Ave.

Mountain View police host toy drive

The Mountain View Police Department is collecting new toys for its annual Cops that Care event on Dec. 20.

The holiday tradition provides gifts to local children in need, serving more than 1,100 kids each year, according to a police department press release.

This year, the program is low on donations and the police department is asking for the community to help out by contributing new, unwrapped toys. Gifts can be dropped off at the police station, 1000 Villa St., before Dec. 20. Donations also can be made in the form of cash or checks to the Mountain View Police Activities League with “Cops that Care” noted in the comment section.

Cops that Care got its start 23 years ago when a now-retired school resource officer, Ron Cooper, and his family filled a patrol vehicle with toys and drove around Mountain View distributing gifts to children. The program grew with the help of now-retired Captain Bruce Barsi who joined Cooper to hand out toys, the press release said.

For more information about the program, community members can email Officer Guiuliana Leopold at Guiuliana.Leopold@mountainview.gov.

Critical need for O+ and A+ blood donations

The Stanford Blood Center is putting out a call for blood donations this week, as supplies of certain blood types run scarce.

In particular, “A+ and O+ blood inventory is critically low, following an unusually high level of hospital usage over the weekend,” according to a Monday press release from the blood center.

The organization is asking community members to schedule appointments this week by visiting stanfordbloodcenter.org, calling 888-723-7831 or texting 999-777. Walk-in donations are also allowed.

Stanford Blood Center has a Mountain View location at 515 South Drive, Suite #20. There are also locations in Menlo Park, Campbell and Dublin.

The Mountain View Chamber of Commerce is also partnering with the Stanford Blood Center to run a mobile blood drive in downtown Mountain View this week. The event will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, at the corner of Mercy and Castro streets. Sign-ups are available online. Walk-ins will also be accepted.

Those who donate blood with the Stanford Blood Center in December will be automatically entered to win four tickets to the Super Bowl on Feb. 8 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. Donors this month will also get 1,000 bonus points to spend at the blood center’s online donor store, the press release said.
