Bubb Elementary School’s weekly ‘bike bus’ takes off in Mountain View

Local transit and education advocates have started a weekly “bike bus” for Bubb Elementary students aimed at offering a safe, fun and environmentally conscious way for kids to get to school.

Created by Terry Barton, chair of Mountain View’s Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee, and Silja Paymer, Bubb’s PTA vice president, the program has been attracting dozens of bike-riding students and parents, according to a recent press release. The first two rides in April were a success, so the organizers decided to make it a weekly event on Monday mornings.

Participants wait at designated points along a predetermined route to join the group of riders as they pass by. Attendees may also merge into the “bike bus” from anywhere along the right-hand side of the course, the press release said.

“A bike bus is more than just a ride to school; it’s a moving community,” Paymer said in the press release. “It’s been incredible to see the kids start their week by having fun with their friends while building confidence on their bikes, which improves mental health and leads to future independence.”

Bubb’s “bike bus” route starts at Gemello Park on Marich Way and includes entry points at the intersections of Clark Avenue and Jardin Drive, Marilyn Drive and Brookdale Avenue, and Barbara Avenue and Isabella Avenue. The ride begins at 7:25 a.m. on Mondays, with an anticipated arrival time of 7:50 a.m. at Bubb’s campus.

Charles DiFazio, Mountain View Whisman School District’s board president, is planning to participate in one of the upcoming events, he told the Voice, adding that his bicycle is his primary mode of transportation.

“This is a volunteer-led effort that I think is one of the strengths of our community,” DiFazio said. “I’d love for other people to be inspired by it.”

Mountain View encourages residents to sign up for emergency alert system

Amid the water main contamination breach that is still affecting certain Mountain View homes in the Cuesta Park neighborhood, the city is encouraging locals to sign up for a Santa Clara County emergency alert system.

Mountain View may use AlertSCC to quickly send notifications to residents during pressing situations, according to a recent news release. People can sign up for free to receive these alerts via text messages, phone calls and/or emails.

According to the AlertSCC webpage, people signed up for the service could receive messages regarding fires, earthquakes, bad weather and public safety.

The city used the system on Sunday, May 3, to notify people living in the area affected by the water main breach of a super chlorination process, which is now underway.
