A Mountain View man was arrested last week for allegedly carrying out a spate of burglaries, following a monthslong investigation by the Mountain View Police Department.

Since January, detectives have been investigating a series of commercial burglaries committed in Mountain View and neighboring cities. The burglaries were of a similar nature, according to a statement from the Mountain View Police Department.

Many of the burglaries were captured by video surveillance that led to the identification of a suspect, Walter Chicas, a 28-year-old Mountain View resident, police said. All told, the arrest warrant was issued for 23 counts of burglary.

Mountain View detectives arrested Chicas around 1:45 p.m. on May 7 at the 100 block of El Camino Real. The officers received assistance from the Palo Alto Police Department, according to the statement.

Mountain View police then searched a residence located at the 500 block of W. Middlefield Road, and discovered a firearm and other items connecting Chicas to the burglaries, police said.

Detectives later linked the firearm to a burglary that had occurred in Sunnyvale in February. According to the statement, “Chicas admitted to firing the weapon and hiding it before being arrested during this incident and later retrieved it after being released from custody.”

Chicas was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for an arrest warrant and charges related to the Sunnyvale burglary, police said.

Chicas is being held without bail and a hearing is scheduled for June 2, according to county records.
