Police officers arrested a 19-year-old Mountain View resident on Friday, Aug. 8, on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman in East Palo Alto earlier in the week.
An East Palo Alto police officer found a “distraught female adult” on Newell Road at 9:26 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 6, while conducting a patrol check, according to an East Palo Alto Police Department press release.
The woman said that she had been walking home when she was sexually assaulted by a man who fled in a sedan, according to police.
Police used video surveillance and automated license plate readers to track the suspect’s vehicle, which was located in the city of Mountain View on Friday, East Palo Alto police said. After interviewing a man who entered the vehicle, police officers had probable cause to arrest him for sexual assault, the press release said.
According to police, their investigation indicated that the woman and suspect hadn’t met before the alleged assault occurred. The suspect was booked into San Mateo County jail for sexual battery and assault with the intent to commit felony sex crimes, according to the press release.
East Palo Alto police ask anyone with information about the case to contact Detective Sergeant Jose Luaorozco at jluaorozco@cityofepa.org or 650-853-3160.
