An East Bay man who shot a Mountain View police officer at point-blank range during a traffic stop four years ago was sentenced Wednesday to 50 years to life in prison, according to a news release from the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.

The defendant, Jeffrey Choy, was convicted of attempted murder in May. Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Brian Buckelew handed down the sentence on Oct. 7.

Choy, a Union City resident, shot detective Raymond Clutter with a 9 mm handgun after Clutter pulled him over for running a stop sign and a four-way intersection in downtown Mountain View on July 16, 2022. Choy reportedly fired two rounds. One of the bullets missed Clutter while the other went through his arm and struck his bullet proof vest, District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in the Oct. 7 news release.

Choy then fled the area in his vehicle, leading to a 24-hour manhunt. During that time, Choy crashed his vehicle and hid for several hours in a laundromat. He was then arrested the next day while having a family brunch at a Black Bear Diner in Fremont, Rosen said.

At the time of his arrest, Choy had a criminal record and was prohibited from carrying weapons, according to Rosen.

“A police officer is alive and back on the beat only due to his training, reflexes and a few lucky inches,” Rosen said in the news release. “Today’s sentencing was justice – and a sobering reminder of the brave sacrifices that police officers make every shift to protect us all.”
