Mountain View High School students sheltered-in-place for less than an hour Tuesday due to a report of a woman near the campus holding what appeared to be an axe. Police searched the area but did not end up finding any suspects.
Shortly after noon on Nov. 4, police officers went to the intersection of Levin Avenue and Diericx Drive, which is north of the high school campus, after receiving a report of a suspicious person, Mountain View Police Department spokesperson Monica Leon said.Â
“The reporting parties stated they saw a female holding a blunt object resembling an axe,” Leon wrote in an email.
At approximately 12:25 p.m., school administrators told students and staff to remain indoors while the police department investigated the situation, Principal Kip Glazer said in an email to families after the incident. Once the police determined that the area was safe, the order was lifted at 1:15 p.m., she said.
Instruction continued while students and staff sheltered-in-place. Glazer stressed that the measure was precautionary, with no immediate threat to the school.
The order came right at the end of lunch, which meant that some students stayed in nearby classrooms as opposed to trying to make it to their actual fifth period classes, Superintendent Eric Volta told the Voice.
While students sheltered in place, police “conducted an extensive search of the area, and no signs of the woman or anything resembling an ax were located,” Leon said.
Update: This story was updated on Wednesday, Nov. 5, with more information from police about the incident that prompted the shelter-in-place order.
