With construction now expected to start at Walden West in early July, the outdoor school has announced that its summer camps for that month are cancelled.

During active construction this summer, the camp is anticipating there to be limited access to buildings, as well as safety concerns and possible service disruptions. Instead of offering restricted programming, officials have decided to close the camp for July, according to a press release from the Santa Clara County Office of Education

The affected programs include Summer Day Camp, Wild Things Day Camp, Leaders in Training, Counselors in Training and Summer Camp Counselors.

Officials have notified families who had signed up for any of these offerings, and staff are working to issue full refunds, the press release said. Those who were registered for a July session can alternatively move their slot to June if availability allows.

For 75 years, Walden West has been providing hands-on environmental education to thousands of local students through school and summer programs. News of the camp’s July closure comes a month after the county office of education announced plans to update the outdoor school’s facilities

Construction is expected to take place over the course of the next two school years.

Initially, officials were uncertain about whether programs would be able to operate during construction, but since then, an alternate location has been identified — Camp Via West in Cupertino. The office of education is looking to host school science camp programming at this location for the 2026-27 school year, pending finalization of a lease and sufficient interest from local school districts, the press release said.
