Substitute teachers in the Mountain View Los Altos High School District are getting their first raise in roughly five years.

The MVLA school board voted 5-0 on Monday to set daily pay for substitute teachers at a flat rate of $280. Previously, they earned either $250 or $280.25, depending on that day’s bell schedule. Substitutes taking on part-day assignments that are three hours or less will continue to be paid $130.

The last time MVLA changed substitute pay was in 2021, as classes were resuming in person during the COVID-19 pandemic, Associate Superintendent Leyla Benson told the board.

“We were competitive, up until this point,” Benson said at Monday’s meeting. “Due to substitutes being in short order, [districts] around the area have increased their rates. So it seems prudent for us to do the same.”

Substitute teachers in the Mountain View Whisman School District earn $137.50 for half days, and $275 for full-days. Mountain View Whisman’s school board approved a raise last year from $250 to $275.

When MVLA can’t find a substitute teacher to take an assignment, administrators often ask another teacher to fill in. That’s significantly more expensive, Benson said, with in-house coverage costing the district $464 to $539 a day.

“It also throws off a teacher’s day when, at the last minute, they have to go during their preparation period to cover for a colleague,” she said.

MVLA has already hired substitutes for the start of this school year, but Benson told the Voice she anticipates the district will start accepting applications again in October.
