Eastbound traffic on Ravenswood Avenue at the railroad tracks remained closed after a pedestrian fatality on Wednesday morning, Oct. 14, near Alma Street and Sherwood Way, according to a Menlo Park police alert.
Police said streets near the intersection of Alma Street and Sherwood Way, would remain closed until further notice, and had advised people to avoid the grade crossing heading at eastbound Ravenswood Avenue and westbound Laurel Avenue. At 10:42 a.m., westbound lanes were reopened, according to Menlo Park police.
A passenger on a stopped train at San Antonio station said Caltrain announced that trains were single-tracking through the affected part of Menlo Park. She said a number of passengers got off the train and were seeking alternate transportation.
The Menlo Park Fire Protection District said its first responders were called to the scene at 9 a.m. by police who reported a pedestrian had been hit by a train, but that the individual was pronounced dead before they arrived.
Caltrain canceled several trains and warned of delays of over an hour across the corridor. Caltrain spokesperson Dan Lieberman said shortly before 11 a.m. that the affected train has been released from the scene and that rail traffic was moving in both directions.
