A Monday morning blaze caused extensive smoke damage to an upscale French bakery and restaurant in downtown Mountain View, but no reported injuries, according to the Mountain View Fire Department.
Dispatchers received a call around 8:06 a.m. on Monday, March 3, reporting that smoke was coming from a single-story commercial building, Maison Alyzée at 200 Castro St. When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke pouring from the building and that the sprinkler system had been activated, according to a statement from the Mountain View Fire Department.
One employee had left the building by the time firefighters arrived, officials said.
Firefighters stopped the flow of water from the sprinklers and removed burnt chairs and debris from the building. They then performed an extensive overhaul to ensure the blaze had been completely extinguished and removed standing water from the building, according to the statement.

The heaviest smoke damage was in the kitchen area, at the back of the restaurant. Fire officials say the blaze was possibly caused by a lithium-ion battery that was being used to charge yard equipment in one of the rooms. The fire also caused a CO2 cylinder that was being stored in the same room to explode, fire officials said.
The estimated damage to the building is $100,000, and the building will remain closed until it is cleared by the county’s department of environmental health, according to the statement.
Laurent Pellet, Maison Alyzée president and CEO, says he is working hard to put things back in order and will have news about the bakery’s reopening at a future time. “I don’t like to focus on the dark things,” he said Monday afternoon.
Maison Alyzée first opened in Mountain View in 2018 and expanded to a second location in downtown Burlingame in 2022.

Please, we need the Maison to recover from this. One of my favorites in downtown.
How long is Maison Alyzee gonna close?
How will we celebrate life’s big occasions without Maison Alyzee? I hope they’re able to reopen very soon.
I’m with everyone else here – We need Maison Alyzee back tout suite! They’ve got the best eclairs in town, and I don’t know where else to turn for my croque madame fix…
