A fire broke out at an iconic car wash in Mountain View early Sunday morning, scorching a building and sparking an investigation by the Mountain View Police Department.

Fire crews responded to a report of a fire just before 7 a.m. on June 1 at Kaady Car Wash, formerly known as Lozano Brushless Car Wash, at 2690 W. El Camino Real, according to a statement from the Mountain View Fire Department.

When firefighters arrived, they saw a fire burning through the roof of a single-story office building located on the car wash premises. The building was unoccupied and nobody was injured from the fire, officials said.

Fire crews quickly extinguished the blaze to prevent it from spreading further into the building. Once the flames were put out, firefighters cut open building walls and the roof and used thermal imaging cameras to make sure the fire had not spread, officials said.

The fire reportedly started at the exterior of the building and spread to the bottom of the east wall. The cause of the blaze was under investigation, officials said.

The Mountain View Police Department declined to comment on Tuesday whether the fire is under investigation as an arson incident.

Manny Lozano, original owner of Lozano’s which opened in 1957, said it was a shock to see the fire damage. Lozano sold his business to the Kaady Car Wash chain but still owns the land and is on the property nearly every day, or at the Sunnyvale location.

“Son of a gun, it’s hard to know what to do now,” the nonagenarian said. The office records inside the building were destroyed, he said.

Lozano claims that camera surveillance from the car wash shows a person had lit the fire.

The estimated damage to the office building and contents is $500,000, according to the fire department statement.

Lozano noted that the car wash itself was unaffected by the fire and is still open to customers. “We’ll do the best we can until this is straightened out,” he said.
