Fires broke out in two separate locations in Mountain View this week – a dumpster fire behind a grocery store and a kitchen fire in a downtown restaurant. Both blazes caused structural damage but didn’t result in any reported injuries, according to the Mountain View Fire Department.
99 Ranch dumpster fire
On Monday morning, Mountain View firefighters extinguished a dumpster fire behind a 99 Ranch store near the intersection of Grant Road and El Camino Real. Multiple agencies and engines responded to the blaze.
No injuries were reported, but patrons of the store were temporarily evacuated “out of an abundance of caution,” fire department spokesperson Robert Maitland told the Voice at the scene.
Firefighters were dispatched to the 1300 block of Grant Road around 9:30 a.m. Monday after receiving reports of flames coming from an exterior structure housing dumpsters and a number of utility meters, according to a fire department press release.
Palo Alto firefighters were also deployed, but turned around while en route to the scene because Mountain View firefighters had extinguished the flames, Maitland said. Mountain View police helped direct traffic during the incident.
Firefighters successfully prevented the fire from spreading to the surrounding businesses, but the exterior dumpster area suffered approximately $5,000 in damage. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation, Maitland said.
Kitty Noodle House kitchen fire
On Tuesday evening, firefighters responded to a blaze at Kitty Noodle House, located at 174 Castro St. The restaurant owner described the incident to the Voice as a small kitchen fire that didn’t cause injuries.
The blaze broke out a little before 7:30 p.m., according to a fire department press release. When crews arrived, they saw flames coming from a ruptured gas line in the kitchen. Firefighters turned off the gas from the exterior of the building and extinguished most of the blaze. They then used a water extinguisher to put out the rest of the fire and prevent the flames from spreading to other parts of the restaurant and surrounding businesses, according to the release.
The estimated damage from the fire was $5,000, the press release said. Because of smoke and water damage, the restaurant will remain closed until it’s cleared by the Santa Clara County Department of Environmental Health. The restaurant’s reopening will also need to be approved by the city’s fire and community development departments, the press release said.
