Each week, Embarcadero Media takes a look at home sales activity along the Midpeninsula in the communities of Atherton, East Palo Alto, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Menlo Park, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Portola Valley and Woodside. Home sales are provided by California Resource, a real estate information company that obtains the information from counties’ recorder’s offices. Information is recorded from deeds after the close of escrow and published within four to eight weeks. Here’s a look at home sales activity between June 22 to July 24 that was made public the week of Aug. 3.
Of interest this week … The week’s second-highest recorded sale on the Midpeninsula sits on an unusually large lot measuring 31,744 square feet, or nearly three-quarters of an acre, in North Palo Alto. According to the sales listing, fewer than 30 residential lots larger than 30,000 square feet remain in the area.
Located in the historic Old Palo Alto neighborhood, the 1947, one-story rancher itself is not designated historic, but it has a notable connection to mountaineering history: It was once home to Nicholas Bayard Clinch, a Stanford University graduate and longtime Palo Alto resident who is regarded as one of the nation’s most successful expedition leaders. Clinch led the 1958 American expedition that made the first ascent of Hidden Peak, the world’s 11th-highest mountain, in northeastern Pakistan. He later led the first ascent of Mount Vinson, the highest peak in Antarctica, in 1966-67. Clinch Peak in Antarctica, which rises 15,883 feet, was named in his honor in 2006. The property sold for $21.7 million on July 20, with conceptual plans for a custom home already drawn up.
