The name change was part of a purchase of dozens of Bay Area Albertsons stores by Save Mart, a Central Valley grocery chain.

The Lucky stores were started on the Peninsula in 1931 by Charles Crouch. Millions of people shopped at the stores throughout the years, and thousands of employees worked in them.

“Many of them are still with company,” said Alicia Rockwell, Save Mart communications director, about the former Lucky employees. “They were very excited — they told us they would like to have that name back.”

Lucky operated independently until it was purchased by Salt Lake City-based American Stores Co. in 1988. In 1998, Albertsons bought the stores and changed the name.

The rights to the Lucky name were part of the sale, said Rockwell, adding that Save Mart was happy to return it to the area.

The re-branding of 72 Bay Area stores to the Lucky name is nearly complete, Rockwell said. The deal did not include the Albertsons on California Street, which is one of several unsuccessful stores being sold for other uses. It has been used by temporary business operations since closing last year.

  1. Very good! I liked the Lucky stores, and used to shop there all the time.
Now get rid of the LCD TV screens blasting advertisements in my face in the checkout line, and hire more checkers to replace the “do-it-yourself” registers, and I’d probably start shopping there again.

  2. I came to California just before all the Lucky stores became Albertsons. I have to say that the name “Lucky” really seemed tacky to me so I never shopped there until they changed their name to “Albertsons”. Anyway, I prefer Whole Foods, Trader Joes and Safeway.

  3. I’m with Dave on the matter regarding flat screen tv’s in the check out line. They have no place being there. In fact, I recently went into the new Lucky store at Grant and El Camino and they are no longer there. Thank goodness. I didn’t like being assaulted by them. I do not need to be entertained while I’m waiting in line. What’s wrong with being alone with my thoughts? I can’t believe which way tis world is going. No wonder we have so many more cases of ADHD reported. We’ve lost our focus.

  4. amen to getting rid of the robot checkout hire more checkers and do away with the inane pricing of x.99, like $1.99 shoppers are not that stupid the advertisment industry are trying to hijack our intellect Pleasanton dwwbro124@comcast.net
