The City Council approved a deal earlier this month that will transfer ownership of the Casa SAY homeless youth shelter to the Bill Wilson Center. As a result, the shelter on View Street could be re-opening in mid or late April.

The Bill Wilson Center plans to close its shelter in Santa Clara and move those youth to Mountain View, where two beds would always be reserved for North County youth. The center says it aims to have an “open door” policy, and estimates that 80 to 125 runaways every year could use its shelter.

“The relationship between Casa SAY and the police department has always been excellent,” said council member Nick Galiotto on March 4. “I can’t speak too strongly in support of this opportunity.”

Casa SAY, the only homeless youth shelter in North County, was closed by EHC Lifebuilders in October 2007 for financial reasons.
