As the new school year gets into swing, mentoring and tutoring organizations for middle school and high school students are coming together in a public fair in order to encourage adults from the Mountain View – Los Altos area to support struggling students.
The Volunteer with Youth fair, is set for Wednesday, Aug. 22, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mountain View Public Library Community Room, will introduce potential volunteers to youth organizations such as Reading Partners, JustREAD, JustMATH and the YMCA. Volunteers and students from these organizations will be on hand to answer questions and talk about their experiences.
“We want to provide an opportunity for adults to get involved with youth and build meaningful relationships with them,” says Kim Castro, one of the fair’s organizers. “This will build developmental assets in the lives of kids and show them the community cares about them.”
The fair is organized by the City of Mountain View and the tutoring organization 1,000 Hearts for 1,000 Minds. This is the first Volunteer with Youth fair in Mountain View, and organizers chose late August because most tutoring organizations need more volunteers at the start of the school year, Castro says.
The fair will be held at 585 Franklin St. in Mountain View. For more information, contact Kim Castro at 650-903-6397 or kim.castro@mountainview.gov.
