A 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson and vandalism after a dumpster was set on fire at Cuesta Park Tuesday evening, police said in a statement Monday afternoon.

Mountain View police dispatchers received a call around 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 8 and arrived onto the scene just after firefighters had extinguished the flames. Patrol officers spoke with the suspect, who was still at the park, and found items that could have been used to start the fire, police said.

There were families and small children at Cuesta Park at the time. The dumpster also was located right behind a church, and the dumpster flames were close to setting nearby trees and shrubbery on fire, police said.

The suspect was booked into Santa Clara County jail, police said.
