A bicyclist was taken to the hospital with injuries Thursday afternoon following a collision involving a bus near the intersection of Middlefield and San Antonio roads, according to Palo Alto police.
The collision was reported shortly after 5 p.m. and the Palo Alto Police Department’s Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) team was investigating at the intersection, according to the police. Travel lanes on southbound Middlefield Road were reportedly closed.
The intersection is within Palo Alto, roughly a block from the Mountain View border.
Palo Alto police Lt. Nicolas Martinez said that the bus and the bicyclist were the only parties involved in the collision, according to the initial investigation. The cyclist suffered major injuries, he said.
The bus driver remained on scene and cooperated with the police, he said. Drugs are not suspected to be involved at this time.
As of Friday morning, no one has been cited, Martinez said. The cause of the accident was still under investigation Friday.

That’s a very dangerous intersection! I live off San Antonio Road in Mountain View and I drive by there just about every day. The bus turns at Middlefield Road heading to and from Palo Alto. The City of Palo Alto wants to develop high rise housing in that area without any shopping etc. but an extremely busy intersection. The traffic often backs up to California Street in Mountain View and drivers are impatient and careless. I’m not surprised that something terrible has happened. My condolences to the cyclist’s family and friends. I also feel sorry for the driver and wish everyone solace and peace.
It doesn’t surprise me that a bus ran into a bicycle. Even when I’m driving, bus drivers are very aggressive on the road. They seem to be in a hurry and think they own the lanes. Something has got to be done!
