Local residents who have died recently include:
Dr. John Erwin Tabor, 86, a former Palo Alto resident who earned dual degrees in history and chemistry, then went on to get his degree from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, who served two tours of duty in Vietnam, who was a partner at Palo Alto Dental Group, who was passionate and curious about the arts, sciences, literature, nature and travel, who is remembered as a man of integrity, wit and compassion, and was a husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Feb. 3, 2024.
Joan Hobstetter, 73, a Palo Alto resident whose lifelong grit and determination buoyed her as she became a single mother at age 16 who chased the California dream all the way from a small New Hampshire town to a new life in Palo Alto alongside her daughter Traci, who taught kindergarten at Addison Elementary School, moonlit as a tart baker at the Renaissance Fair, who was a marathon runner, and who leaves behind a legacy of strength, silliness, epic dance moves, peace and presence in nature and love, on Feb. 12, 2024.
Russ Peach, 88, a 69-year resident of Woodside known for mending fences, his work on horse properties and remodeling homes, serving tractors, mowing fields and more, who became a household name in town and always wore a John Deer hat and was never too far from his tractor, and who often hung out at the Pioneer Saloon and Harry’s Hofbrau, on Feb. 10, 2024.
Robert Aaronson, 68, a Menlo Park resident who graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford Law School, then went on to work for the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office before becoming an independent police auditor who was determined to help solve the difficulties faced by the homeless population, who collected fountain pens, watches and coins and loved music and riding his motorcycle, on Dec. 12, 2023.
George Stanley (Stan) Turnbull Jr., 94, a Los Altos resident who was an editor of the school newspaper in Eugene, Oregon, who spent two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, who obtained his master’s degree in journalism from Stanford University, who worked for the Wall Street Journal, eventually working in the advertising and publicity department at PG&E, who was a lover of the outdoors, puns and Ham Radio, and who identified as an Anglophile, on Jan. 11, 2024.
