Here are the local residents who died recently:

Jean Johnston, 99, a Portola Valley resident who had lived in Palo Alto for nearly 40 years, who worked as a travel agent and as an adjunct professor at Foothill College, and who enjoyed going backpacking and and hosting dinner parties died on Aug. 30.

Helen Lechner, 80, a Palo Alto resident who was nicknamed “Honey,” who enjoyed hiking in Yosemite, watching Shakespeare in the park and cooking French cuisine and who had a career in web marketing, including a long stint at Cisco, died on Aug. 23.

James Van Horne, 90, a Palo Alto resident who had spent 42 years as a professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, who published three textbooks and many articles in finance, economic and management journals and who took leave from the university in the mid-1970s to serve as a deputy assistant secretary of the U.S. Treasury, died on Sept. 1.

Bonnie Jean Blythe, 93, a Palo Alto resident who taught at a Mountain View school and who was known as a charming hostess and supporter of local charities, died on Sept. 7.

Vivian Jenna, a Sacramento resident who formerly lived in Redwood City, who taught special education, drove a classic 1965 Mustang convertible and cultivated roses, died on May 13.
