Two people were killed Thursday night in a five-car collision on southbound Interstate 280 near the Foothill Expressway exit in Los Altos Hills, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision was reported at around 5:10 p.m., according to California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Sophie Lu. She said early investigations showed that a Lexus sedan traveling northbound flipped over the highway’s concrete median, into oncoming southbound traffic.

According to a news release from the CHP, the sedan was traveling northbound at an unknown speed when it traveled uphill on a dirt embankment, crashed into the concrete median and overturned on the highway’s southbound lanes. It then struck a Kia SUV that was traveling southbound in the second lane from the left.

The Kia was heavily damaged and debris from it hit two other cars, a Tesla SUV and a Toyota SUV, that were traveling on the highway ahead of the Kia. Both cars were damaged by the debris, according to the CHP.

The driver of the Lexus and the driver of the Toyota sedan were pronounced deceased on scene by fire personnel, according to the news release. The driver of the Kia was transported to Valley Medical Center for minor injuries.

The CHP said that It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in this crash. All southbound lanes on I-280 were reopened at approximately 9:11 pm.

The identities of the two people who were killed have not yet been released by the Santa Clara County Medical Coroner’s office. Lu said the highway patrol’s investigation on this collision is still ongoing.
