This week includes East Palo Alto Children’s Day in the Park on Saturday, Green Fest on Sunday and moth observations on Monday night. Then, plan ahead and attend a compost workshop brought to you by the City of Palo Alto on Sept. 5.
COMMUNITY FUN … Celebrate and build community during Children’s Day in the Park on Saturday, Aug. 29 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bell Street Park, 550 Bell St., East Palo Alto. The fun-filled day includes free food, entertainment and games. The police department will be giving away backpacks and school supplies, and Home Depot staff will offer workshops for children. GREEN FEST … Learn how to add green practices to any part of daily life at Green Fest on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2-5 p.m., at the Mitchell Park Community Center, 3700 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. Attendees can learn about local produce, greener lunches, Palo Alto’s water source, carpooling, biking and more. The free event also includes a panel discussion at 3 p.m. with Kevin Carley and Karla Dailey from Palo Alto Utilities; and Peter Drekmeier, director of Tuolumne River Trust and former Palo Alto mayor. MOTH NIGHT … See moths up close in all sizes and shapes on Monday, Aug. 31, 8-10:30 p.m., at the McClellan Ranch Preserve, 22221 McClellan Road, Cupertino. To attract moths and other night insects, Acterra staff will set up black lights and sheets. Guests will also have the option of going on a short night walk to listen for owls and see glowing millipedes. All ages are welcome to attend. COMPOST BASICS … Learn how to enhance your garden’s soil and overall health during a compost course from the City of Palo Alto on Saturday, Sept. 5, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Master Gardener’s Demonstration Garden at Eleanor Pardee Park, 851 Center Drive, Palo Alto. The garden entrance is on Center Drive near Martin Avenue. Participants will see how compost helps plants gain nutrients, develop root structures and hold water. This free course provides locals the knowledge they need to start composting. No registration is required. Info: City of Palo Alto workshops
