A San Mateo sushi staple is preparing to close later this month, but it plans to reopen in a new location under a new name.

Sushi Sam’s Edomata, known for its high-quality yet casual sushi, will have its last day of service on Dec. 28 and will rebrand as Sushi Edomata in an undisclosed location, according to a post on the restaurant’s Instagram page Dec. 16.

Chef-owner Sam Sugiyama, “the heart and soul behind Sushi Sam’s,” will be retiring, according to the Instagram post. For those who want to say goodbye, Sam Sugiyama and his wife Mayumi Sugiyama will be at Sushi Sam’s on Dec. 29 for Sam’s retirement party

Established in 2014, Sushi Sam’s often drew long lines and cultivated a loyal following. In 2020, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan donated $100,000 each to eight of their favorite restaurants, including Sushi Sam’s.

Sushi Sam’s will be closed Dec. 22-25 for the holidays. Sushi Sam’s did not reply to a request for comment before press time.
