Sydney Lowell scored five goals and the Castilleja water polo team took over sole possession of first place in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division on Thursday, beating Los Gatos 6-4 in its own pool.

Castilleja (7-2, 6-0) won the battle of the co-leaders by shutting out the Wildcats in the fourth period with a stifling defense.

Castilleja has a game on Los Gatos and is two games up on Gunn with eight league matches to play. The Gators visit Mountain View for the late match Tuesday to complete the first round of SCVAL action. Los Gatos (7-1, 5-1) welcomes Palo Alto.

In a match where every point counted, Lowell was able to convert on three penalty shots, all of which were drawn by Gabby Lewis, who also scored a goal and recorded three steals.

Goalie Sutchie Ofori-Nyako again played well, rejecting some of Los Gatos’ best shots to keep the Gators on top. Lewis, Lowell, Annika Burks and Janet Meng, among others, gave Ofori-Nyako all the support she needed.
