The defending Central Coast Section Division I girls soccer champion Menlo opened its season with a 2-0 non-league victory over host San Mateo on Tuesday.

Freshman Roya Rezaee, in her prep soccer debut, scored in the 59th minute to snap a scoreless tie. She was assisted by senior Madison Liu.

Liu scored 10 minutes later after sending a crossing pass to the left which deflected off a Bearcats player and into the net.

Junior goalie Helen Barkley earned the shutout. Menlo hosts University (San Francisco) on Thursday.

In other games, Menlo-Atherton scored in the first three minutes and never looked back in a 3-0 victory over visiting South San Francisco and Pinewood tied visiting Design Tech.
