Artificial intelligence is making inroads in Mountain View with OpenAI planning to occupy a cluster of office buildings just a few blocks down the road from other tech giants and startups, including Google and Waymo.
The creator of ChatGPT has signed a rental agreement for office buildings at 350 and 380 Ellis Street, according to property records filed with the Santa Clara County Recorder’s Office on Feb. 25. The deal was reported by The Mercury last week.
OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The nearly 450,000 square foot office complex signals a notable Silicon Valley expansion for OpenAI, which already has offices in San Francisco. The region has been seeing increasing demand for data centers to power services like ChatGPT.
The Ellis property is owned by KKR Real Estate Finance Trust, according to the Mercury News.
The 10-year lease allows for two extensions, each for a period of six years. The lease also stipulates that OpenAI has the “right of first offer to purchase” the buildings, according to county records.
Led by Sam Altman, the valuation of OpenAI is more than $800 billion, according to the San Francisco Business Times.
