Editor’s Note: Leadership Mountain View (LMV) prepares adults who live or work in Mountain View to take on a wide variety of leadership roles in the community. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, the program guides 32 individuals through a nine-month program each year. Over 400 persons have graduated from the program since it began in 1989. The profile below is one in a series that will run periodically to highlight the accomplishments of LMV graduates.
Kalwant Sandhu
Kalwant Sandhu, a member of the most recent LMV class of 2005, is a perpetual motion machine. He runs three businesses, coaches five soccer teams, and serves on the city’s Human Relations Committee (HRC).
Born in Singapore and educated in London, Kalwant came to America in 1980 on a soccer scholarship at USF. He moved to Mountain View 11 years ago, and lives in the Castro City neighborhood with his wife and two sons.
Kalwant enrolled in LMV because wanted to know more about the underlying workings of the city. Though he was already serving on the HRC, he says he was “shocked at how much more there was to learn.”
His leadership role model is his mother. After his father died, his mother took over the family’s business interests and fought to keep them thriving. This was a side of his mother he’d never seen, and he realized that most of us can accomplish far more than we ever imagine.
Kalwant’s advice for future community leaders is straightforward: “Go out and make a difference,” and “What we do for ourselves is mortal, what we do for others is immortal.”
