LA girls swimmers take meet with last-second heroics
Los Altos Girls Swimming proved to be among the best in CCS. Trailing Menlo Atherton last Thursday in the final race of the meet, the girls’ team overtook the Dons in the final lap of the 400 freestyle relay to win the meet by four points. Coach Tim Dietrich cited a strong effort from freshman Alex Kaufman for the last-second heroics in the away meet. The girls team has qualified for CCS in all three relays (the 400 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 200 medley relay). The girls narrowly pulled off an upset at Tuesday’s home meet against CCS powerhouse Sacred Heart Prep, but lost 79-89. Besides continued strong relay finishes, including a decisive victory in the 400 freestyle relay, Sophomore Rachel Evans won both the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke.
“She [Evans] is one of the hardest workers in practices and it shows up in the meets,” said Dietrich.
LA boys swimmers rebuilding their team
The young Los Altos boys swim team lost overwhelmingly to CCS elite Sacred Heart Prep on Tuesday. Freshman Ryan Danni was one of the few bright spots for Los Altos, winning the fan-favorite 50 freestyle with a time of 23.52. Despite stocking heavily on underclassmen, two of the three relay teams have qualified for CCS.Spartan track crushes competition
Last Thursday, Mountain View Track and Field gave visiting Fremont a very unfriendly welcome, with crushing victories on both sides. The Spartan boys (2-0) won by a staggering 92-26, while the girls (2-0) won by an even more lopsided 106-20.According to head coach Sam Read, the top male performer of the meet was Nikolai Lemak, who placed first in the shotput with a distance of 42 feet, 1.5 inches and first in the discus with a throw of 137 feet, 2 inches. Other standouts included Robbie Reid, who won the 800 meter, and Roger Huang’s winning 1600 meter run.
On the girls’ side the Spartans were led by Kelly Thom’s jumps. She placed first in all her events, winning the high jump with a leap of 5 feet even, and the long jump and triple jump with distances of 15 feet 8 inches and 33 feet 10 inches, respectively.
According to Read, other star performances were Kate Blood’s victories in 100 and 200 meter sprints and Kate Kornegay winning 100 and 300 meter hurdles.
Undefeated thus far, Read sees promise. “Our top returning athletes are showing great form at this early date, so we’re all really excited for the rest of the season and the championship portion,” said Read. “Our [home] meet on Thursday versus Homestead should be a good test for us.”
