The eighth-grade boys of Blach Junior High School prevailed last month at the VJHSAL Track and Field Championship meet on May 18. The Blach Falcons scored 40 points, barely edging out Cupertino and Miller junior high schools.
The Falcons earned the bulk of their points from second-place finishes in the 4×100 and again in the 1600 meter, where 5-minute-miler Garret Rour timed in at 4:56.27. Mark Rutner ran a 12.09-second 100 meter dash to earn first place and ten points for Blach.
Graham Junior High also had strong performances from their student athletes. The eighth grade girls finished first in the 4×100 meter relay with a time of 52.28. Victoria Hayward, Nian Anderson, Lauren Mattick and McColl Matthews made up the winning relay team, which qualified and ran at the Sectional Championship on May 24 at St. Francis High School.
Other highlights came from the Graham sixth-grade boys, who won the 4×100 relay and whose Tyler Halstead claimed victory in the 65 meter hurdles.
