Smuin Contemporary Ballet’s Offstage/Onscreen series takes literally the idea that “all the world’s a stage” — or at least all the Bay Area.

While the pandemic keeps audiences away from theaters, performing arts companies have developed numerous creative ways to bring the show to their audiences virtually. But Smuin has gone one better and taken the performance out of the theater setting altogether with a series of four dance films shot in various scenic locations around the Bay Area. The films are offered on-demand through Feb. 28 on Smuin’s website.

The four films highlight new works choreographed, performed by company artists, who also shot and edited the films.

The films allowed the artists to not only branch out creatively, but also to perform safely, outdoors and within their own company “pod.” According to the Smuin website, company artists work in three distinct pods and the artists in each pod who perform together have also quarantined together.
