Trinity United Methodist Church, which houses Mountain View’s cold weather homeless shelter, is preparing to start construction that will temporarily use parking spots in a downtown lot.

The City Council voted unanimously last week to approve the closure of up to six parking spots in Lot 7, which is located off Hope Street, next to Trinity Church, for up to 60 days. The item was part of the council’s consent agenda at its Oct. 14 meeting, which is a collection of routine items that are meant to be approved in a single vote.

The construction is expected to take up to eight weeks to complete and is being scheduled to avoid interfering with the homeless shelter, which operates from mid-October through mid-April. Some of the construction work will restart in the spring after the shelter closes for the winter season, according to the council report.

The construction will focus on facade improvements, including reroofing, widening the church’s main doors, replacing windows and reducing the steeple’s height, the report said.

The six parking spots that will be closed off are located alongside Trinity Church and will be used as an enclosure for solid waste and recycling, the report said.

Trinity Church will pay the city up to $3,000 in fees for the six parking spots. The church will also handle posting “no parking” signs and cover fencing costs associated with construction, according to the report.

  1. This is to make improvements at the only shelter in Mountain View. Charging a 3,000 fee seems a bit petty on the part of the City…especially right after making a proclamation for Compassion Week 🙁
