While doing construction work on Friday, a city contractor potentially contaminated a water main near Cuesta Park in Mountain View, causing the city to shut off water to the surrounding neighborhood, impacting about 75 households.
Crews were sent to the corner of Cuesta Drive and Bonita Avenue around 2:50 p.m. to respond to a “water main contamination breach,” according to a city news release. A contractor was working when “some slurry mix came into contact with the live water main,” the release said. Once city officials became aware of the situation, crews shut off the water to the affected households.
The streets impacted by the shut off are Cuesta Drive, Leona Lane, Montalto Drive, Drucilla Drive and Carla Court, the release said.
Around 5 p.m., a construction crew could be seen working in a deep trench at the corner of Cuesta Drive and Bonita Avenue. A city engineer declined to comment when asked what had happened and when water would be restored.
Leona Lane residents Andy and Pam Miller, who were observing the construction work, said their water had been shut off earlier that afternoon. Residents were told that water stations were available at Cuesta Park, the Millers said.
“This is the first time this has happened to us,” Pam Miller said.
As of 5:30 p.m, a city news release said that water was expected to be restored within a few hours and that the city was working closely with state regulators on a flushing plan.
