28th annual Cops & Gobblers returns

The Mountain View Public Safety Foundation is hosting its 28th annual Thanksgiving Cops & Gobblers food distribution event on Sunday, Nov. 24.

Each year, Mountain View police officers and members of the public gather outside the police and fire headquarters to assemble hundreds of baskets of food, which are then distributed to local families in need.

This year, the plan is to give out roughly 450 baskets, Mountain View Public Safety Foundation Executive Director Amber Wilson told the Voice. Anyone is welcome to show up to volunteer to assemble and distribute the baskets, Wilson said. No RSVP is necessary. The event will start at 9 a.m., rain or shine, at 1000 Villa St.

The public safety foundation is also accepting monetary donations to support the program, which can be made on its website. Donations can also be made via check to the Mountain View Public Safety Foundation, 650 Castro St., Suite 120-379.

City decides to keep new timing for annual garage sale weekend

The city of Mountain View is planning to continue to hold its annual citywide garage sale in September, after successfully piloting that timing this year.

The citywide garage sale weekend has typically taken place in early May, but the city moved it to September this year after 2023’s event was impacted by rainy weather. The event is a chance for households throughout the city to sign up to hold garage sales on the same weekend.

Over 175 homes participated this year, with the city describing the event as a “big success” in a recent newsletter. The city conducted a survey after this year’s event about the new timing, and 55% of respondents preferred having it in September. Another 27% preferred the previous May schedule, while 13% had no preference and 5% proposed other dates.

Given those results, the city said it plans to hold next year’s event in mid-September.
