County voter information guides are in the mail

With the Nov. 4 special election less than six weeks away, the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters’ Office has begun mailing out voter information guides.

The guides will be sent to all active voters who are registered by Oct. 4, according to a recent county press release. The guides provide candidate and ballot measure information, locations for vote centers and ballot drop boxes, a sample ballot, and other election resources.

Locally, the special election ballot will include the race for Santa Clara County Assessor, after longtime assessor Larry Stone stepped down in July, and a five-eighths cent sales tax increase that would benefit the county hospital system, which is being impacted by federal funding cuts.

Voters will also see Proposition 50 on their ballots, a statewide redistricting measure that would redraw California’s congressional lines to favor Democrats. The measure is an attempt to combat partisan redistricting efforts in Republican-led states.

On the registrar of voters’ website, voters can check and change their registration status and update their preferred language. Translated voter guides, which are available in Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog and Vietnamese, will be sent to individuals who have changed their preferred language for voting materials. Electronic versions of the guide are also available.

The registrar of voters’ office will begin mailing vote-by-mail ballots to all active registered voters on Oct. 6.

Mountain View firefighters host pancake breakfast

To kick off fire prevention month, the Mountain View Fire Department is hosting its annual pancake breakfast on Saturday, Oct. 4, at Fire Station 4, 229 N. Whisman Road.

Firefighters will put on a rappelling demonstration, vehicle extrication event and fire apparatus exhibition, according to the event webpage. Additionally, community members will have the opportunity to participate in fire prevention activities and learn how to keep their families safe from fire hazards. There will also be a silent auction.

Event tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and children 12 and under. Proceeds will benefit Mountain View Firefighters Random Acts, a nonprofit through which firefighters perform random acts of kindness in the community, and the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation.

Mountain View celebrates 10th annual Oktoberfest

Mountain View’s tenth annual Oktoberfest celebration is coming up on Saturday, Oct. 11, and Sunday, Oct. 12.

This year, the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce has taken over as the sole organizer of the event after Stein’s Beer Garden changed ownership earlier this year.

Mountain View’s Oktoberfest celebrations started in 2013 and have since become a tradition in the community, attracting visitors from across the Peninsula. This year, the family-friendly festival is expanding, with events now taking place along Castro Street.

The two-day event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., will have German food and beer, as well as live music from traditional German ensembles. The itinerary also features activities such as a yodeling contest, chicken dance and costume contest.
