The Mountain View Los Altos High School District’s board plans next week to consider three trustee boundary map options, each of which would split the district into five areas for future school board elections.
The high school district decided last September that it would switch from its current at-large system of electing school board members – where each board member is elected by voters from throughout the district – to an area-based one. Under the new system, the district would be divided into five regions, which would each elect one board member.
The board voted unanimously to make the change in an attempt to avoid a potential lawsuit under the California Voting Rights Act. The district had received a demand letter from an attorney sent on behalf of a district resident. Many government entities throughout California have received similar letters, often prompting switches to area-based elections.
At a Monday, Jan. 27, special meeting, the board will consider three draft maps developed by a demographer that the district has hired. Another hearing is currently scheduled for March 17. The board is required to hold at least two such hearings on the maps before deciding which one to pick, according to the district.
The final map would take effect for the November 2026 school board election.
Monday’s special meeting to discuss the maps is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. in the district’s board room, 1299 Bryant Ave.
The board will then hold its regularly scheduled meeting afterwards. Topics on the regular meeting agenda include a resolution to support immigrant students, a presentation on gym modernization projects and a mid-year goals update.
