The Mountain View Fire Department (MVFD) responded to an apartment fire on the 100 block of Sierra Vista Avenue after receiving a call on Feb. 10 at 12:48 p.m. Firefighters were on the scene for 3 hours, extinguishing flames and cutting open walls and ceilings to ensure flames were completely extinguished, according to a press release by MVFD.
The fire started in a first-floor unit of a multi-story apartment building. Neighbors were able to help evacuate the residents of the unit before the fire department arrived on the scene and Mountain View Police Department temporarily closed traffic on Sierra Vista Avenue.
Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring residences.
According to the press release, the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but early indications say it may have been accidental. The damage is estimated to be $10,000.
The affected resident received a $250 gift card from the California Professional Firefighters Union Supplying Aid to Victims of Emergency Program. The building management is currently working with the American Red Cross to make temporary accommodations for the resident.
The resident declined further treatment after being evaluated as a patient of smoke inhalation and transferred to Santa Clara County Ambulance for care and hospital transport. A second patient from a neighboring apartment was also evaluated and declined treatment as well.
Traffic is now reopened in both directions of Sierra Vista Avenue.
